Why are Special Inspections required?
Special inspections are required for certain structural components to verify that they adhere to the standards set forth in the plans and in the Uniform Building Code.  Special inspections are performed by an independent third party and should be hired by the owner of the project or the owner’s representative.  When a special inspector is hired by the contractor direct, it could pose a potential conflict of interest.

Types of Special Inspections:
Reinforced Concrete: Special/Deputy Inspection is required for the verification of reinforcing steel, all concrete placements that exceeds 2500 pounds per square inch and during the taking of tests specimens to perform slump, temperature, air content and compressive tests for each concrete mix design.

Reinforced Masonry: Special/Deputy Inspection for masonry is required for the preparation of any pre construction masonry prisms, mortar field testing when needed, during the placement of all masonry units and reinforcing steel, prior to enclosing clean outs, and during all grouting operations to obtain the necessary testing samples.

Pre-stressed/Post Tension Concrete: Special/deputy inspection of pre stress / post-tension concrete is required to verify reinforced steel, pre stress / post-tension tendons, application of stressing forces and grouting of bonded pre stressing tendons in the seismic-force resisting system.

Structural Steel and Welding: Special/Deputy Inspection is required for the welding of any member or connection that is designed to resist loads and forces required by code, during the welding of special moment-resisting steel frames and during the welding of reinforcing steel.

High Strength Bolting: Special/Deputy Inspection for high strength bolting is required during installation and tightening of A325 and A490 bolts is in accordance with recognized standards.

Fireproofing: Special/Deputy Inspection of fireproofing is required to ensure compliance with UBC Standard 7-6 and to obtain the necessary testing samples.

Shotcrete/Gunite: Special/Deputy Inspection is required for verification of reinforcing steel, during shotcrete/gunite application and the assembly, shooting, testing, and disassembly of test panels. Shotcrete is defined as pneumatically projected concrete at a high velocity onto a surface.

Epoxy Dowel/Anchor Installation: Special/Deputy Inspection is required for all drill-in anchors; which include the following: expansion anchors, chemical (adhesive) and grouted anchors, and un-reinforced masonry (URM) anchors. The inspection is required to ensure that all materials and installation procedure comply with recognized standards and contract documents.

Reinforced Steel/Bolts: Special/Deputy Inspection is required continuously during placement of all reinforcing steel/rebar or periodically before the enclosing of formwork but before the placement of concrete.
